South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has taken over from Idriss Deby, President of the Republic of Chad,as the new  chairman of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) on the sidelines of the AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The assumption of Ramaphosa’s chairmanship deepens South Africa’s role in the review processes across the continent and the upscaling of the implementation of actions aimed at improving good governance.

The APRM is a mutually agreed instrument voluntarily acceded to by AU member States as an African self-monitoring mechanism. The APRM is often described as “Africa’s unique and innovative approach to governance” with the objective of improving governance dynamics at the local, national and continental levels.
